K-5 Residency
Purpose
The Teach Asian American Stories K–5 Teacher Residency supports elementary educators in developing the knowledge, teaching practices, and curricular resources needed to meaningfully integrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) histories and experiences into K–5 classrooms. With support from Dr. Karishma Desai of Rutgers University, residents will learn to make complex histories accessible and developmentally appropriate for young learners while connecting AAPI stories across social studies, literacy, and other subject areas.
Residents will meet over the course of 13 months to deepen their understanding of AAPI histories and identities, and explore culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogies. Central to the Residency is each Resident’s design and implementation of curricular projects for classrooms and school districts. Upon completion of the program, Residents are asked to share their curricular resources and best practices with other New Jersey educators through workshops and professional development trainings, amplifying their work across the state.
