Join us at the New Jersey Council for Social Studies Conference during Session 1 for Learning and Unlearning Asian American Representation in Film: The Intersection of Pop Culture and Policy!
Hollywood was born in America, and it has a rich history filled with inspiring examples of innovation and art. However, like all history, it also has a dark pattern of silencing, erasing, and oppressing anything or anyone who doesn’t conform to the strict standards of the era in regards to what it means to be American. This workshop will offer a history of Asian American representation in visual media throughout American history – starting with visual advertisements all the way up through modern film. We’ll look at how American Art reflects American policy and how each can embolden the other to continue harmful practices as well as inspire the other to change for the better.
